Lincoln Sign Fulham Goalkeeper Wickens
Lincoln City has signed George Wickens, a 22-year-old goalkeeper from Fulham, to a four-year contract, making him their new first-choice goalkeeper. Wickens, who has represented England at the Under-18 level, joins the Imps with undisclosed financial details surrounding the deal.
The acquisition comes at a crucial juncture for Lincoln, following the departure of their former first-choice keeper Luka Jensen to Championship outfit Millwall. Wickens arrives with a background shaped by his tenure at Fulham, although he did not make a senior appearance for the London club. His development included a loan spell at Wealdstone and a stint with Ross County in the Scottish Premiership earlier this year, during which he made a notable impact.
Wickens garnered attention with a memorable performance against Celtic, where he saved two penalties at Parkhead. His standout achievement in Scotland also includes setting a new record for the number of saves in a match, accumulating 19 stops against Rangers.
Speaking about the latest addition to the squad, Lincoln’s head coach Michael Skubala praised Wickens for his goalkeeping abilities and highlighted his strong character, particularly noting his decision to leave Fulham in pursuit of regular playing time and career advancement.
Jez George, Lincoln’s director of football, emphasized the strategic approach behind Wickens’ signing, indicating that it underscores the club’s effective recruitment strategy and forward planning. He underscored how Wickens’ arrival aligns with the club’s model, reinvesting a portion of the funds received from Jensen’s transfer to secure a talented young goalkeeper with considerable potential and future value.
The move reflects Lincoln’s ambition to strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead, signaling their proactive stance in shaping a competitive team capable of achieving their goals in the upcoming season.
