Southampton Sign Midfielder Downes from West Ham
Southampton have officially secured the permanent transfer of midfielder Flynn Downes from West Ham, solidifying his return to St Mary’s after a successful loan spell last season. The 25-year-old has committed to a four-year contract with the club.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Downes made a significant impact, featuring in 37 matches and contributing two goals as Southampton clinched promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs. Manager Russell Martin expressed his delight at securing Downes’ return, emphasizing its importance and the timing of finalizing the deal early in pre-season.
“He was such a pivotal figure for us last season, both on and off the field,” Martin commented. “Flynn possesses exceptional technical ability, coupled with a robust and aggressive style of play. His athleticism adds another dimension to our midfield.”
Downes originally joined West Ham from Swansea in 2022 and had amassed 35 appearances for the Hammers before his loan stint with Southampton. Reflecting on his return to the club, Downes spoke warmly about his experience and connection with Southampton.
“Being part of it last year was truly special,” Downes remarked. “The genuine camaraderie and warmth from everyone at the club made a profound impact on me. It’s an environment where I feel valued and motivated to contribute.”
Downes’ permanent signing marks Southampton’s seventh acquisition since their promotion from the Championship, following closely on the heels of Yukinari Sugawara’s arrival from AZ Alkmaar. His return underscores Southampton’s ambition to bolster their squad as they prepare for the challenges of top-flight football once again.
